What is Karate?
Discover a martial art that brings movement, discipline and character together.
A martial art with Okinawan roots
Karate developed in Okinawa, where local fighting traditions were influenced by Chinese martial arts. Today it is practised around the world as a martial art and a sport. The name is commonly translated as empty hand, reflecting its emphasis on unarmed techniques.
The foundations of practice
Karate training brings together three connected elements:
- Kihon: basic techniques, including stances, blocks, punches and kicks.
- Kata: sequences of movements that give those techniques structure and purpose.
- Kumite: partner practice that explores timing, distance and application.
A place to begin
You do not need experience to take your first step. Begin by finding a club, meeting the instructor and learning how its classes are organised. Consistent practice matters more than getting everything right on your first day.
