Our Karate Style
Goju-Ryu: the balance of strength, softness and purposeful practice.
Our style: Goju-Ryu
Kedah Karate Association practises Goju-Ryu, an Okinawan karate style whose name means hard and soft school. Its approach combines decisive techniques with yielding, circular movements. Strength and softness are complementary parts of the same practice.
Our tradition
Goju-Ryu was developed by Chojun Miyagi, building on the Naha-te teachings of his teacher, Kanryo Higaonna. This heritage connects Okinawan karate with influences from southern Chinese martial arts.
What gives Goju-Ryu its character?
The style places importance on posture, breathing and coordinated movement. Students study how to remain stable while adapting to a partner's movement, rather than relying on force alone.
Sanchin and Tensho are central kata in Goju-Ryu. They provide a foundation for exploring the relationship between firm structure and softer movement, under an instructor's guidance.
Learning with patience
Understanding grows through regular practice. Basics, kata and partner work offer different ways to study the same principles, with each lesson building on the one before it.
