Kumite
Partner practice built on awareness, control and mutual respect.
What is kumite?
Kumite is karate practice with a partner. It connects basic techniques and kata with the changing demands of distance, timing and movement.
Learning together
Exercises may begin with agreed movements before becoming less predictable. The purpose is to learn with a partner, not to overwhelm them.
Control comes first
Follow the instructor's directions and the boundaries set for the exercise. Communicate concerns, respect your partner and stop when instructed.
Kumite as a sport
Competition adds a defined ruleset, officials and permitted techniques. Requirements vary by event, so athletes should follow the organiser's current rules and their instructor's guidance.
