Kata

A living connection between technique, understanding and tradition.

What is kata?

Kata is a set sequence of karate movements. Through its stances, turns and techniques, a student studies how individual actions connect into a coherent whole.

Learning beyond the sequence

Remembering the order is the beginning. Repeated practice creates opportunities to refine balance, timing and transitions. Understanding why a movement is performed gives the sequence greater meaning.

Bunkai, the study of applications, explores how kata movements may relate to interactions with a partner. This work belongs under an instructor's supervision.

Kata in Goju-Ryu

Goju-Ryu includes kata such as Sanchin, Tensho, Gekisai Dai Ichi and Gekisai Dai Ni. Each offers a different perspective on the style's techniques and principles. Your instructor will guide the order and depth of study.

Tradition and performance

Kata can also be performed in competition. Whether training or competing, the aim is to give each movement attention and purpose, rather than simply complete the sequence.
